The Ruger Precision® Rimfire Model 8402 is a precision-oriented bolt-action rifle chambered in .17 HMR, combining the ergonomics and adjustability of a centerfire precision rifle with the accuracy and efficiency of the .17 HMR cartridge. Featuring an 18-inch cold hammer-forged target barrel, 15-round capacity, Quick-Fit adjustable stock, 15-inch free-float M-LOK handguard, Marksman Adjustable™ trigger, and factory Picatinny optics rail, the 8402 is built for precision rimfire shooting, target use, and competition.

The rifle is constructed around a molded one-piece glass-filled nylon chassis and adjustable buttstock assembly, providing the strength, stiffness, and stability needed for consistent accuracy. Ruger's Quick-Fit Precision Rimfire stock allows both the length of pull and comb height to be quickly adjusted for different shooters, optics, and shooting positions. Length of pull can be adjusted from 12 to 15.50 inches, with molded index marks making it easy to return to a preferred setting.

The stock incorporates several features commonly found on centerfire precision rifles, including a flat Picatinny bag rider, molded tether point for a rear squeeze bag, and a metal QD pocket for sling attachment. These features make the rifle particularly well suited for supported shooting positions and precision rimfire applications.

At the heart of Model 8402 is an 18-inch cold hammer-forged target barrel manufactured from 1137 alloy steel. The barrel features a 1:9" right-hand twist with six grooves and is threaded 1/2"-28 at the muzzle. Ruger includes a factory thread protector that covers both the muzzle threads and crown.

Surrounding the barrel is a 15-inch aluminum free-float handguard with a black hard-coat-anodized finish. Magpul® M-LOK® slots are positioned on all four sides, providing extensive mounting capability while offering the clearance necessary for larger precision-oriented optics.

The Ruger Marksman Adjustable™ trigger is externally adjustable from 2.25 to 5 pounds, allowing shooters to tailor trigger pull to their preferences. Ruger conveniently stores the trigger-adjustment wrench in a compartment within the buttstock.

A distinctive feature of the Precision Rimfire platform is Ruger's Big-Gun bolt throw adjustment. The bolt can be configured for either a traditional 1.5-inch rimfire bolt throw or a 3-inch short-action centerfire-style throw. This allows shooters to more closely replicate the manipulation of a centerfire precision rifle during training or competition.

The rifle also features an oversized bolt handle modeled after the full-size Ruger Precision Rifle®, along with an AR-pattern pistol grip and 45-degree reversible safety selector. The design can accommodate most compatible AR-style grips and selectors, providing additional customization potential.

Model 8402 is designed for use with an optic and therefore does not include traditional iron sights. Instead, Ruger installs an anodized 0 MOA Picatinny scope base at the factory, providing a straightforward mounting platform for compatible scopes and other optics.

Feeding is handled by Ruger's magnum rimfire magazine system. The rifle accepts compatible Ruger® magnum rimfire magazines, including the JMX-1 rotary magazine and BX-15® Magnum magazine, and Model 8402 includes one 15-round BX-15 Magnum magazine.
