The Ruger Precision® Rimfire Model 8401 is a .22 LR bolt-action precision rifle designed to replicate many of the ergonomics and controls of Ruger’s centerfire Precision Rifle in a rimfire platform. Model 8401 features an 18-inch cold hammer-forged target barrel, 10-round capacity, Quick-Fit adjustable Precision Rimfire stock, 15-inch aluminum M-LOK handguard, Ruger Marksman Adjustable™ trigger, 30 MOA Picatinny scope base, and threaded muzzle. Ruger identifies this exact configuration as Model 8401 / UPC 736676084012.

The rifle is chambered in .22 LR and has a factory-listed capacity of 10 rounds. Ruger includes two 10-round BX-1 magazines, and the rifle accepts all Ruger 10/22 magazines, giving it broad compatibility with Ruger’s established rimfire magazine system.

Model 8401 uses an 18-inch target-profile barrel cold hammer-forged from 1137 alloy steel. The barrel has six grooves and a 1:16" right-hand twist. Ruger designed the barrel so it can be replaced by a competent gunsmith using AR-style wrenches and appropriate headspace gauges.

The muzzle is threaded 1/2"-28 for compatible muzzle accessories and comes from the factory with a thread protector that covers both the threads and crown.

A major feature of the Precision Rimfire is its Quick-Fit adjustable stock. Length of pull can be adjusted from 12" to 15.50", while comb height is also adjustable. Molded reference marks make it easier to return the stock to a previous position. The chassis and adjustable buttstock assembly are manufactured from glass-filled nylon for rigidity and stability.

The buttstock incorporates a flat Picatinny bag rider, a molded-in tether point for a squeeze bag, and a metal QD sling pocket. These features make the platform particularly well suited to supported precision shooting positions.

Model 8401 also incorporates Ruger’s unique Big-Gun bolt throw adjustment. The system allows the shooter to switch between the normal 1.5-inch rimfire bolt throw and a 3-inch short-action centerfire-style bolt throw, providing a training experience that more closely replicates operation of a centerfire precision rifle.

The rifle is equipped with the Ruger Marksman Adjustable™ trigger, externally adjustable from 2.25 to 5 pounds. Ruger stores the adjustment wrench in a compartment in the buttstock.

An AR-pattern pistol grip and 45-degree reversible safety selector further reinforce the centerfire-style ergonomics. Ruger notes that the rifle can also be configured with most compatible AR-style grips and selectors.

Surrounding the barrel is a 15-inch aluminum free-float handguard with a black hard-coat anodized finish. Magpul® M-LOK® slots on all four sides provide mounting positions for compatible accessories while maintaining clearance for larger precision-oriented optics.

Model 8401 does not include conventional iron sights. Instead, Ruger installs an anodized 30 MOA Picatinny scope base, providing additional elevation for longer-range rimfire shooting.

The rifle weighs 6.8 pounds, measures 38.63 inches overall, and Ruger currently lists Model 8401 as Available with a suggested retail price of $629.00.
