The Ruger Precision® Rimfire Model 8404 is a precision-oriented bolt-action rifle chambered in .22 WMR, designed to deliver the ergonomics and adjustability of a centerfire precision rifle in an economical rimfire platform. Featuring an 18-inch target barrel, Quick-Fit adjustable stock, 15-round capacity, free-float M-LOK handguard, Marksman Adjustable™ trigger, and factory Picatinny optics rail, the 8404 is well suited for precision rimfire shooting, competition, training, and recreational target use.
The rifle is built around a molded one-piece chassis and adjustable buttstock assembly manufactured from glass-filled nylon, providing a rigid and stable foundation. Ruger's Quick-Fit Precision Rimfire stock allows both length of pull and comb height to be adjusted, with a length-of-pull range of 12 to 15.50 inches. Molded index marks make it easy to return the stock to a previously selected position.
The adjustable buttstock also incorporates several precision-shooting features, including a flat Picatinny bag rider, molded tether point for a squeeze bag, and a metal QD pocket for sling attachment. These features make it easier to configure the rifle around supported shooting positions.
At the heart of Model 8404 is an 18-inch cold hammer-forged target barrel manufactured from 1137 alloy steel. The barrel uses a 1:14" right-hand twist with six grooves and is threaded 1/2"-28 at the muzzle. A factory thread protector covers both the threads and crown. Ruger also designed the barrel system so that a competent gunsmith can replace the barrel using AR-style wrenches and headspace gauges.
Surrounding the barrel is a substantial 15-inch aluminum free-float handguard with a black hard-coat anodized finish. Magpul® M-LOK® slots are located on all four sides, providing plenty of mounting space for compatible accessories while offering clearance for larger precision-oriented optics.
Trigger duties are handled by the Ruger Marksman Adjustable™ trigger, which is externally adjustable from 2.25 to 5 pounds. Ruger even provides storage for the adjustment wrench inside the buttstock compartment.
One of the more distinctive features of the Precision Rimfire is Ruger's Big-Gun bolt throw adjustment. The shooter can change the bolt travel from the standard 1.5-inch rimfire throw to a 3-inch short-action centerfire-style throw. This allows the rifle to more closely simulate the manual operation of a centerfire precision rifle and can help shooters train against short-stroking the bolt during competition.
The rifle also incorporates an oversized bolt handle modeled after the full-size Ruger Precision Rifle®. An AR-pattern pistol grip and 45-degree reversible safety selector further reinforce the centerfire-style ergonomics, and the rifle can accept most compatible AR-style grips and selectors.
For optics, Model 8404 comes equipped with a factory-installed 0 MOA anodized Picatinny scope base. There are no traditional iron sights, allowing shooters to configure the rifle around their preferred optic.
Feeding is handled by Ruger's magnum rimfire magazine system. Model 8404 accepts compatible Ruger magnum rimfire magazines, including the JMX-1 rotary magazine and BX-15® Magnum magazine, and ships with one 15-round BX-15 Magnum magazine.
