The Ruger Security-9 Model 3816 is a full-size 9mm Luger semi-automatic pistol featuring a 15+1 capacity, 4-inch barrel, external manual safety, and factory-installed Viridian® E-Series™ red laser. Built around Ruger’s Secure Action™ fire-control system, the 3816 combines straightforward controls, durable construction, and an integrated aiming laser in a versatile 9mm platform.
A standout feature of Model 3816 is its factory-installed Viridian E-Series red laser. The compact laser is securely mounted to the pistol’s accessory rail and trigger guard and features ambidextrous push-button activation. Ruger specifies a red 635–650 nm laser and notes that the unit weighs just over half an ounce with the battery installed.
The Security-9 is equipped with a 4-inch alloy-steel barrel with a blued finish and a through-hardened alloy-steel slide finished in black oxide. The pistol uses a high-performance glass-filled nylon grip frame, while a precision-machined, hard-coat-anodized aluminum chassis with full-length guide rails provides a rigid foundation for the operating components.
At the heart of the pistol is Ruger’s Secure Action™ fire-control system, which combines a protected internal hammer with a bladed-safety trigger. Ruger describes the system as providing a short, smooth trigger pull with a clean break and positive reset. The internal hammer also provides strong ignition force while allowing relatively easy slide manipulation.
For sighting, Model 3816 uses Ruger’s dovetailed high-visibility sight system, consisting of a fixed front sight and drift-adjustable rear sight. Front cocking serrations provide additional purchase for slide manipulation, while the textured grip frame provides a secure and comfortable gripping surface.
Safety features include an external manual safety, integrated trigger safety, neutrally balanced sear with significant engagement and strong spring tension, and a hammer catch designed to help prevent the hammer from contacting the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled. Ruger also designed the pistol for easy takedown without special tools or requiring the trigger to be pulled.
